WT2 Introductions v.2

ARTICLE 1

How and why is a social group represented in a particular way?

In studying power and privilege, this written task will discuss how and why certain social groups are portrayed within a text. The Guardian editorial 'A picture of loneliness: you are looking at the last male northern white rhino', written by Jonathan Jones, informs the reader of the extinction of the white rhino. Jones portrays biases through statistic, photos, and diction to appeal to the reader's sympathy therefore giving value to the animal, in order to effectively raise awareness of its extinction.

ARTICLE 2

How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers?

Monica Tan's opinion column, "My boyfriend 'sort-of' raped me. But I didn't break up with him" is published on The Guardian - relaying the events of her personal experience with sexual assault. In relation to perspective, the reader's interpretation of the article can differ based on their gender. Due to the female narrative, it can create an enemy in the male population; suggesting that sexual assault is ore relevant (and perhaps more important) amongst the female population, furthermore, female readers would come to sympathise more with the author.
