Martin Luther King Paragraphs

Martin Luther King's intended audience includes all citizens of America, however, the author also directs his speech towards the inequality and unfair treatment of the black community. Using 'negro' as a derogative term used by the white community towards the African-American community, emphasizing that colored people are not equal to the white society. This is vital because at first, he alludes to the declaration of Independence as well as mentioning that all men would be treated and guaranteed 'liberty, rights of life, and to pursue happiness'; all as equals. MLK then compares it to the segregation of the white's and black's at the time, clearly expressing the reason for his speech. Furthermore, he hopes to make a change and hope to get rid of the segregation, mistreatment and injustice of the Black community, thus solidifying the purpose of his speech.

MLK's speech is presented in paragraphs. Using rhetorical devices, such as metaphors, anaphora, and alliteration, MLK appeals to the reader's emotion through pathos. This style has been influenced by American history as well as the inequality of the white and black communities within the nation. Moreover, this has been demonstrated by referring to the emancipation Proclamation and Declaration of Independence, including the selective diction ('negro') of MLK and the reference to states with an immense black population.

  1. Good job Erika! I think you've done very well combining all your points, including audience, purpose, stylistic features and so on. I just think that it would be better to work on your topic sentence because right now it's jumping straight into who the speech's audience were. Also, maybe you could make connection of you stylistic features mentioned, to actual evidence from the text to then explain its effect on the audience. Perhaps this was because of your time limitation, I understand. But the topic sentence could be modified! Else, your points were clear! :)

  2. Great job at keeping your paragraphs concise. Good information all around, and supported well. Only thing I would improve is mentioning structure, and also using more quotes from the text
